Absenteeism in the workplace has plummeted in The Netherlands in the past few years. In 2014, it decreased to 3,8%, which is the lowest absenteeism rate recorded since 1996.

The Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) suspects the ailing economy as well as the mild flu epidemic behind the decrease. In the previous year, an average 38 of 1000 employees were sick. In 2000 / 2001, the absenteeism rate was recorded at 5.5%. This significantly dropped to 4.2% until 2004 and hardly changed until 2011, where it started to consistently decrease once again.

According to CBS, large companies tend to report higher workplace absenteeism. In 2014, companies with less than 10 employees reported an absenteeism rate of 1.6%, whereas companies with between 10 and 100 workers reported 3.3% and large organisations with more than 100 employers indicated a rate of 4.6%. Overall,  statistics show a decrease in absenteeism in all companies, regardless of their size.
