The labor market is getting tighter and as a result, the average salary that employers offer in vacancies increases. Last year in the third quarter there were 2.4 unemployed per vacancy, now that number has dropped significantly to 1.8.

In the third quarter of 2017 there were 221,326 vacancies available in the Netherlands, an increase of 5.2% compared to the third quarter of 2016. The average gross annual salary advertised for vacancies was € 40,189, an increase of 6.9%. This is evident from the latest new figures from vacancy search engine Adzuna.

Less competition between applicants

A sharp drop in the number of unemployed per available vacancy means that there is less competition between applicants, says Thomas de Schuyter of Adzuna.

Provinces in which the number of vacancies rose sharply were North Holland (+17.9%) and Zeeland (+16.0%). Provinces in which supply fell sharply are Friesland (-12.8%) and Limburg (-11.2%). In Friesland, the vacancies offered mainly decreased in Leeuwarden, where there was a decrease of 577 vacancies (-31.9%) compared to last year.

Employers offer higher salaries

The average advertised gross annual salary in vacancies increased in all provinces. The highest average salary can be found in North Holland with € 45,552, in Amsterdam the average is even higher at € 49,968.

“The average advertised annual salary in Amsterdam is pulled up by the many IT and financial services vacancies that receive high salaries. For both sectors, the salary in Amsterdam is above € 50,000,” explains Thomas de Schuyter.

Sectors with many new vacancies are health care with 3,185 additional vacancies and catering establishments with 3,409. In health care, most of the vacancies are in South Holland. In the hospitality industry, most new vacancies can be found in North Holland.

Top 10 vacancies per sector (development from 3rd quarter 2016 to 3rd quarter 2017):

Sectors where the number of vacancies decreased were sales with a decrease of 4,706 vacancies and industry with 3,524. In both sales and industry, the decreases in the number of vacancies available are distributed proportionately across all provinces.
