‘ Sleep deprivation because of workload’
According to results of the annual research done by the NSWO ( Dutch Society for Sleep - Wake Research), a quarter of all interviewees sometimes use stimulants in order to perform better at work. The chairman for the NSWO Hans Hamburger says that it is clear that sleep and work have an effect on one and another. The survey shows that 30 percent of all interviewees regularly lose sleep over their jobs.
One hour less
People who work more than 50 hours a week get almost one hour sleep less on average each night. ‘Getting a good night’s sleep is important but work takes priority’, according to neurologist and sleep expert Dr Hamburger of the Slotervaart Hospital in Amsterdam. Sleep deprivation is more common among the so-called night owls. People who are more active at night go to sleep nearly an hour and a half later than people who are more active in the morning. During the working week, these night owls do have to get up early and as a result they are not rested or they oversleep. The research was held under 1000 healthy employed Dutch people.
