
Both companies announced their fusion on Wednesday 24 June 2015. The combined group, Ahold Delhaize, will operate 6,500 stores with 375,000 associates. Mats Jansson, the current Chairman of Delhaize, will become Chairman of the new firm, with current Ahold Chief Executive Dick Boer as CEO, who said: “The proposed merger with Delhaize is an exciting opportunity to create an even stronger and more innovative retail leader for our customers, associates and shareholders worldwide.”
According to the press release, Ahold shareholders will own 61% of the combined company’s equity and the rest will be in Delhaize’s hands. Both companies expect the merger to generate savings of €500 million. per year, to be realized in the third year after completion.
Ahold Delhaize promises to create better places to work, drawing upon similar values and heritage. The transaction is supposed to be completed in one year.
