European legislation determines that employees from the European Economic Area (
EEA) have permission to work in The Netherlands. The EEA consists of all the countries belonging to the European Union and Lichtenstein, Norway and Iceland. Furthermore, the government ensures that employees needed in The Netherlands are able to start quicker.
Free Traffic within the European Union
For employees from one of the EEA countries there are no limitations. They are able to work in The Netherlands without permits. Citizens of countries which do not belong to the EEA need a work permit.
Citizens from Croatia are not allowed to work in The Netherlands without a work permit. On July 1, 2013 Croatia became a member of the EU.
