Working outside the usual office hours is increasingly becoming the norm. Figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics from last year show that four in ten workers are working regularly in the evening, or even at night. Also they often work in the weekends.

In the Netherlands there are a lot of people who are working in the evenings, CBS reported on the basis of new figures for 2016. One reason is that the percentage of self-employed in the Netherlands is higher proportionally than in other EU countries.

More than 3.6 million people regularly work in the evening or at night (between seven o'clock and six o'clock in the morning) or in the weekend. Another 1.9 million people do that occasionally. Altogether, there are nearly 5.5 million people working out of office hours: nearly two thirds (65%) of all workers.

In recent years there has been a slight increase in working out of office hours. This happens most on Saturdays or in the evenings. More than half of workers (52%) are working in the evening and an almost equally large proportion (51%) work on Saturday. More than one in three workers work sometimes or regularly on Sunday, while more than one in seven workers works in the night hours.

Self-employed and Employees

Between the self-employed and employees there are significantly different percentages for working outside office hours. Those who work outside the office hours mostly are self-employed with employees (92%). By the self-employed (without personnel) itis 84%. In workers with flexible hours, it is slightly more common to work in the evening than permanent workers: 68% against 59%. The self-employed with staff work much more on Saturday than permanent workers do. They also work more often than permanent employees in the evening, on Sundays or at night.
