More than half of the staff in hospitals, nursing homes, GP practices and home care says they have to deal with “a lot of work”. 43% said they frequently need to work ‘very fast’, and 35% often have ‘extra hard work’.
Emotionally Demanding
In the health care the emotional burden is also higher than on average, says a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and the research institute TNO. More than a quarter of workers find this work emotionally demanding.
That is more than twice as often as average. On that researchers say: “Work cannot consume us a lot because it is often very fast, a lot and hard, but also because it is emotionallydemanding. In health care and welfare, the emotional burden is the highest of all industries”.
Overuse on Employees
Suzanne Kruizinga, chairman of trade union CNV Care & Wellbeing, sees a few major causes of the problem. “Unnecessary rules and unnecessary administration. The amount of care is higherat the moment a professional steps in. Lastly, a great number of employees lack influence on the way work is carried out, as well as the work hours.A shame”, says Kruizinga. “These people do such wonderful work, but because of the high demand placed on them, the workforce is overwhelmed”.
Health care and welfare in the Netherlands has nearly 1.2 million workers. More than eight out of ten workers are women.
