The government agreed to this proposal which was put forward by State Secretary for Social Affairs Paul de Krom last Friday. According to the government it is undesirable for employees from outside the European Union to be recruited while, in the Netherlands half a million workers on benefits could be doing that same job. Therefore, conditions will be adjusted as was announced on Prinsjesdag (day of the Queen’s speech). From next year onwards it will be obligatory for employers to pay a set wage (in line with the market), to workers from outside the EU.
Should there be a shortage in demand for Dutch workers or workers from within the EU in a certain sector, then the minister for that particular sector can set a quota. Also, an employee from outside the EU will only be able to work here without a permit if he or she has worked in the Netherlands for over 5 years. Now that limit is set on 3 years.
