A teacher who falls in love with his student or a therapist who falls in love with his patient. Some infatuations you best better avoid.

Last week, a court decided to immediately fire a guard of a women;s prison Ter Peel, because he had a relationship with a prisoner. “Power is eroticised”, says psychologist and cognitive behavioural therapist CarinPrins. “There is little to do. An unwanted infatuation can happen to anyone, the only question is: What do you do with it?” The dismissed guardian of the women’s prison kept silent about his relationship, fearing the bad outcome.

Three tips to keep you away from undesirable infatuations:

Recognize It

If you find yourself in love, acknowledge it, says Prins. “Do not pretend it is not there, but try to investigate. Ask yourself where the love comes from? Why you are in this, even knowing that this love must not happen? Is it because you are not feeling happy at home? Or because you are lonely? Ask for support by psychologist or social worker”.

Do Something About It

“Recognize that it is an undesirable situation, when there is a power relationship, as in the case of the guard and the prisoner, you are susceptible to blackmail”, said the psychologist. “The fact that you are venal, of course, is an undesirable situation in the workplace. Take responsibility and make sure you do not come in contact with the person that you are in love with”.

Make It Negotiable

The moment you are unable to suppress your feelings, ask for help, advises Prins. “Be honest, discuss it with your manager and make sure you will be transferred to another department or branch. That may not be possible in some cases, for example if you are a teacher. But make sure in any case that you do not teach anymore the person that you fall in love with”.
